The plaques were carved with their initials. Solid brass hardware came from Lee Valley.WOODMaple, CherryTried & True Varnish OilOakWater based Urethane
Pencil BoxOne of the first simple boxes I made was a pencil box. The corners are simple miter joints with oak keys and the top sets into a rebbat cut in the carcase. A little Walnut tab acts as the handle/pull. An Oak strip laminated with Walnut veneer divides the two book matched Maple pieces for the top. A smaller one has a tip up lid.WOODMaple, Oak, WalnutWatco Oil, Antique wood wax
Cribbage BoxA life long friend was retiring and planning to hit the road in an RV for months on end, so I designed and build this cribbage box as a retirement present. The center is the cribbage board made from Ipea strips laminated with thin Ash dividers. I printed the hole pattern and stuck them on the strips as guides to drill by. The pegs come from Lee Valley. I made two of them one with Ash and one with Oak.WOODIpea, AshTung Oil (3 coats) Bees wax
Business Card HolderI generally carry business cards, so I designed and built several. The holder isalso a great way to use up the tag ends of boards that are cut off due to a knot or wild grain. I have made many of them for gifts. This little box has been featured in an article in the Canadian WoodWorks magazine. WOODmaple, african blackwoodLacquer
Love & Peace Carved BoxI tried combining marquetry and carving in a singe theme. The main case uses low relief carving of linked hearts to symbolize love. The marquetry of aspen, maple and anigre. The marquetry is backed by stable plywood and the inside of the lid is walnut backed on plywood. The two are separated by space a picture framed by moulded walnut thus giving it a thicker appearance. Carved Indian BoxThis box is a basic bandsaw box (I was able to use my scrollsaw so there is no entrance cut). The shape is an arrow head and the horse head is carved with slight bit of stain on the mane and the feather. The image comes from an ink drawing I bought off of an old Indian.WOODClear CedarLacquer
Puzzle BoxThis is a rather challenging puzzle. Twenty four, 1/2" square pieces are dado'ed in various ways so they fit together around a simple box. Getting it apart is the trick. Getting it back together is very difficult without the instructions.WOOD:Mahogany, Maple, WalnutWatco, Stain Oil
Ring TowerI designed this box three times on paper and twice as prototype and did not like any of them. At the last minute I changed the woods I planned to use and this is the results. The idea is to put a ring up on a ‘pedestal’. The Idea came from the image of the young man on his knees holding up the store type box with the ring in. WOODSpalded Maple & Ipea, Deft oil.
Tiger Maple Recipe BoxThis box keeps recipes for good food. It was made from a piece of Tiger Maple and has my first attempt at hand cut dovetails for the joints. The top is four pieces of Lacewood checker boarded together and dadoed into the sides. Poplar Recipe BoxThis is a Recipe box with some Intarsia on the top. This was designed to hold a set of cards that came with a book or something. The top is dadoed into the sides. This was my first attempt at finger joints and Intarsia. The fingers were done with a jig that slides in the T rail on the router table. The card separators have titles on them This was done by printing a mirror image of the words on a laser printer. They are then ironed on with a low heat iron and sprayed with lacquer to seal them.
